A Damage-Repair Solution to Aging-Related Diseases
In this excerpt from his 2005 TED talk, SRF Chief Science Officer Dr. Aubrey de Grey describes a new way to address age-related disease: repair the relevant cellular and molecular damage in order to prevent pathologies from ever developing. Dr. de Grey contrasts this idea with mainstream gerontology and geriatrics approaches. Rather than attempting to intervene when pathology is evident or to prevent the adverse side effects of metabolism, the SRF theory proposes instead to address the damage caused by metabolism that lead to age-related pathology. Dr. de Grey suggests that this damage can be grouped into seven major categories and that repairing this damage might indeed be the most promising route towards addressing the diseases of aging, such as heart disease and cancer.
