Other Ways to Help
SENS Foundation works to develop, promote and ensure widespread access to rejuvenation biotechnologies which address the disabilities and diseases of aging. Throughout this website you will find details of how we do this, and why. In addition to volunteering there are a number of other ways in which you can help us.
Do the Science
If you're an undergraduate student: SENS Foundation has a specific component of its Academic Initiative which is dedicated to the support of undergraduate students. For further details please see our SENSFAI pages.
If you're a graduate student or current postdoc in biology/medicine: We badly need biologists to work on the various aspects of rejuvenation biotechnologies. There are many professors who are happy to supervise important projects that are interesting for scientific reasons and also have anti-aging potential. In general we have had great success by finding really committed young scientists who will join a laboratory with the right expertise and resources and will drive a project forward without getting distracted by the short-term goals of getting as many publications as possible.
If you'd like to apply to do research on rejuvenation biotechnologies, please use our centralized volunteering process. Enclose your CV, and describe any current academic obligations (such as an ongoing PhD) and the amount of time you could commit to this work. Also, please mention if there are any aspects of our program on which you'd be particularly well-qualified to work, or where you have existing relevant experience. Your email should be addressed to our Volunteer Coordinator. Please start the subject line of your email with "SENS Research Application".
Develop the Science
If you’re a biologist: Read the papers on the technologies we need to develop. If you believe those papers to be too optimistic, read the key experimental work cited and see if that changes your mind. Also, listen and read about our scientific conferences: the IABG 10, that Dr de Grey ran in September 2003; SENS 2, which occurred in September 2005 and was, if anything, even better than IABG 10; and the most recent, successful SENS 3. If you're still skeptical, email Dr de Grey to say why - you might be right, but the issue is far too important to leave one's objections to private ruminations. Conversely, if you're inspired to work in any of these areas, email Dr de Grey so that we can put you in touch with others who are working on the same topic.
Fund the Research
Conventional medical charities, government medical research bureaucracies, and pharmaceutical giants continue to pursue the old, disease-by-disease, treatment-based approach to the diseases of aging, ignoring the new science which seeks to repair the damage of aging itself. That means it's up to all of us to put the money in the hands of the scientists who can bring this new science out of the laboratory and into the clinic. SENS Foundation is devoted directly to this mission. The SENS Research program directly invests your donation into scientific research that opens up the key bottlenecks in the pipeline to the rejuvenation of aging bodies.
Get Political
Governments around the world are facing the human and financial costs of a looming demographic wave of human suffering, medical costs, and loss of human capital to the biological aging of their populations. Yet they are failing to make the rational investments into scientific research into the causes and cure of the biological aging process that would avert this age-related suffering, disability, and social upheaval. In democratic societies, simple, old-fashioned tools like writing letters to elected representatives give citizens like you the power to move your governments to put national medical research institutes to work on the cure.
Create New "Engineering" Insights
If you're an engineer, computer scientist, etc.: Along with research scientists, the progress of new medical technology can be advanced by disruptive ideas coming from people from outside the field with experience in solving practical engineering problems. If you're an engineer or technologist, you can launch yourself into this interdisciplinary space by learning first the basics of our approach, and then establishing needed technical foundations in cellular and molecular biology (for example, Essential Cell Biology or the more advanced Molecular Biology of the Cell) and of biogerontology.
Break the News
If you're a journalist: Write about advances in rejuvenation biotechnologies and the work of SENS Foundation. Contact Dr de Grey for interviews about the work of the Foundation. Even more importantly, please interview other mainstream biogerontologists (the more senior and high-profile the better) and ask them to explain any objections that they might have to our approach in a credible way, without hand-waving. And also listen to the talks from IABG 10, SENS 2, and SENS 3.
Spread the Word
Whoever you are: Talk with your friends, family, loved ones, and colleagues about rejuvenation biotechnologies, our work, and why you want to help to meet this biomedical challenge. If you have a website or blog, help to educate your readers by exploring the issues and possibilities online, and by linking to SENS Foundation's website. Be ready to address some of the common questions and concerns that they may have about a future life, free from the diseases and disabilities of aging. Be ready to discuss the outlines of the science that will be needed to meet this biomedical challenge, by reading Ending Aging. And help to spread that understanding by loaning your copy out, by giving copies to friends and associates, and donating copies to libraries and other institutions.
