Abstract:

According to the free radical theory, aging is a gradual accumulation of damages inflicted by the products of oxygen metabolism. These reactive oxygen species (ROS) typically oxidize biomolecules through the mechanism involving hydrogen abstraction. This mechanism suggests that the isotope effect (IE) can be employed to mitigate the ROS-mediated oxidative damage. Possible ways of using the IE to fight aging and age-related diseases will be discussed.
